Self-Build Log Cabin Kits Can Save You Money!
There is no reason why someone who is physically fit enough and able to enlist a little help from a few friends shouldn’t build a log cabin from a kit. In fact, the kind of kits we supply are quite easy to build, you just need to have a stable, flat and dry place to erect it and be prepared to invest some time and energy.
How important is the foundation?
Levelling the base on which you are going to stand the building is more than just making sure it looks good. You will soon run into problems if the base is irregular or on sloping ground. The sides of the foundation must accommodate the floor area and should be parallel. Placing the structure on parallel raised walls (as in the picture) will help keep it dry and allow airflow beneath the floor.
You can also use timber ‘bearers’ on which to place the floor area, rather than brick, the latter will of course last longer, though modern treated timbers are commonly utilised as a quicker solution.
The best advice is always to ‘take some time establishing a good foundation’, for the life of the building will benefit from it. If the foundation is well prepared you usually need only to apply occasional coats of preservative to the timber for you to benefit from long service. It is not unusual for modern timber buildings to last decades with just a little maintenance.
If you do not have the time or the energy to take on such a project, Nordic Log Chalets will happily do the work for you. That way you may pay a little more, but you will save both time and trouble.
